Environment Resources

Why is Environmental Resilience Important?

Environmental resilience is critical for the long-term sustainability of our communities and ecosystems. As climate change intensifies and natural disasters become more frequent, strengthening our ability to adapt is essential for protecting lives, property, and natural resources. Environmental resilience ensures that we can withstand and recover from disruptions, safeguarding both human well-being and the environment. By investing in resilient infrastructure, promoting sustainable practices, and preserving natural habitats, we can create a future that is not only more secure but also more equitable and thriving for generations to come.

Local Resources

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) serves as the chief steward of the state’s natural resources – from beautiful Narragansett Bay to our local waters and green spaces to the air we breathe. Their mission put simply is to protect, restore, and promote our environment to ensure Rhode Island remains a wonderful place to live, visit, and raise a family.

They protect these precious resources through development and enforcement of environmental laws, and strive to provide guidance to their many customers in complying with these laws.

They work with their partners to restore our lands and waters, to conserve wildlife and marine resources, and to monitor environmental quality so we can build healthy, more resilient communities.

They promote our natural resources – from our historic parks and beaches to our farms and delicious local food and seafood.  They are focused on helping our state grow “green” and build desirable neighborhoods that offer ample space to recreate and connect with nature.

The Environment Council of Rhode Island (ECRI) is a coalition of over 60 Rhode Island organizations as well as individuals whose mission is to serve as an effective voice for developing and advocating policies and laws that protect and enhance the environment.

The Council embodies and promotes the vision that together we can build an ecologically healthy future in a sustainable economy. ECRI provides its members with a forum for sharing information and technical expertise, and provides policymakers and the public with informed opinions and position statements.

The mission of the Rhode Island Environmental Education Association is to support and promote high-quality environmental education throughout the state. They collaborate with all educators, students, and advocates to respond to community assets, needs, and aspirations.
